Step-by-Step Pressing Process

1. 1

   Pre-press the fabric

   Set your heat press to 270-280F. Press the substrate for 3-5 seconds without the transfer to remove moisture and flatten wrinkles. Gentle pre-press. Wool can shrink and felt under heat and pressure. Keep temperature low.

   Position the transfer

   Center the Foil DTF Transfers on the fabric in the correct placement location. For apparel, use a heat-resistant tape or alignment ruler to verify placement before pressing.

   Apply heat and pressure

   Press at 270-290F for 10-15 seconds with light-medium pressure. Ensure even, consistent pressure across the entire foil surface for complete activation.

   Peel the carrier film (cold peel)

   Wait 30-90 seconds for the transfer to cool completely to room temperature before peeling. Peeling while still warm on a cold-peel film will lift the design. When in doubt, wait longer.

   Finish press

   Place a Teflon sheet or parchment paper over the peeled design. Re-press at 270-280F for 5-8 seconds with light pressure. Use Teflon sheet. Light pressure only. Wool fibers permanently compress under heat/pressure (felting).

Common Pitfalls on Wool / Merino

• Wool will shrink and felt permanently if over-heated. Keep below 290F.
• Wool has natural lanolin oils that can interfere with adhesion. Pre-press helps, but test thoroughly.
• Excessive pressure on wool creates permanent compression/felting marks.
• Merino wool is thinner and more heat-sensitive than standard wool — start at the lower end of the temperature range.
• DTF on wool is a specialty application. Adhesion may be weaker than on cotton or polyester.

Pro Tips for Wool / Merino

• Cold peel is mandatory for wool. Wait 60+ seconds.
• Start at 275F for 12 seconds. Adjust up only if needed.
• Flat-knit wool (beanies, scarves) works better than fluffy/napped wool for DTF.
• Wool felt accepts DTF transfers better than knit wool due to its flat, compressed surface.
• Wash test is especially important — wool is typically washed gently which helps DTF longevity.
